Why San Diego is the Spot for Small Businesses

san diego office space

The beautiful city of San Diego is nestled in Southern California right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, making it a great spot for tourists. What many don’t know is that it’s also a fantastic place to work and live—and even start a new business. CNBC released a list of The Top 25 Cities for Small Business in 2018 and San Diego came in at number nine, rising from the fourteenth spot in 2017. Known for their beaches, shopping and great scenery, San Diego also welcomes dozens of small businesses every year to the community. Shopping local is so important to the people who live in San Diego, and the whole city is benefiting as a result.

Small Business Saturday

Creator of Small Business Saturday, American Express, released some encouraging and hopeful numbers about small businesses in San Diego. Out of the 61% of shoppers that were aware of the day, 82% were going to participate in shopping small and local. Nationally, Small Business Saturday has become a great way for businesses to become involved in the community, and it’s improved their visibility and foot traffic.

Assistance and Incentives

When choosing where to locate and open a small business, there can be a lot of start up costs that come up during the process. Fortunately, out of California’s largest cities, San Diego’s Business License Fees are the lowest. The City of San Diego offers incentives and provides assistance to small businesses because they see the benefits of small businesses filling their city. Not only do the businesses create revenue for themselves and the city, but hundreds of jobs are created as well.

Brokers attend Open House in Mission Valley

It was great to see so many friendly faces at our Broker Open House in Mission Valley. Brokers were able to see and experience the suite first hand, and enjoy nibbling on some Mexican food.  Thank you to all who attended.

In addition to being such a highly sought after location, guests were impressed by the scope of services and amenities that come included with the space.  It is the ideal place for Brokers to refer their corporate clients who need image and flexibility or local companies that want more efficiency and ROI for their rent dollar.

“Our strong broker partnerships have really contributed to our success in San Diego, it was great to see everyone who attended.” said Deborah Davidson. “They’re always so surprised at how much more money they earn over a conventional transaction, and by how easy it is to close a deal!”

Barrister’s Del Mar Tenants & Staff Celebrate Mardi Gras

Long-time tenant, Dr. Tammy Mondry of New Horizons Physical Therapy shows off her winning slice of the cake.

This week the tenants and staff at Barrister Executive Suites, Inc.’s Del Mar location celebrated Mardi Gras with a fun networking mixer themed “Sinful Desserts.” Barrister supplied a decorated cake complete with a small, hidden trinket inside, similar to that of a King’s Cake. The conference room was turned into a west coast version of Mardi Gras, complete with decorations and beads. Tenants and Barrister staff brought their favorite treats for everyone to indulge in, while they mingled amongst one another.

Dr. Tammy Mondry with New Horizons Physical Therapy, who is also an original tenant of the suite, was the lucky winner of an Amazon.com gift card when she found the concealed trinket in her slice of the cake.

Thank you to everyone who participated.  Barrister looks forward to more events in the future!

Barrister’s Davidson Races to Benefit Her San Diego Community

Barrister Sales Manager Deborah Davidson and partner Kathyrn Widdoss compete in The Amazing Race to Serve.

Barrister’s Leasing Manager Deborah Davidson has an amazing experience to share around the water cooler with tenants and colleagues.

Davidson recently participated in “The Amazing Race to Serve” on January 29th. The day-long event is organized by San Diego’s North Coast Church, and is based on the popular television show, “The Amazing Race.”

Described by organizers as a fun and interactive scavenger hunt on steroids, 240 two-person teams raced a 10-mile scavenger hunt from the Oceanside Pier to the North Coast Church Vista Campus.

The event generated over $28,000 in support of the church’s upcoming “Weekend of Service” in May, a project to help North County residents.

“It was a great way to feel more involved in the San Diego community and to help raise funds for a great cause,” says Davidson.

Davidson and her partner completed the race and answered all clues in an impressive time of 4.5 hours.

Barrister Executive Suites, Inc. has three locations in the San Diego area: Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, and Del Mar.

Checking in with Our San Diego Attorneys

P68 Tenant Lunch RevisedBy all appearances, the recent office appreciation lunch we hosted in San Diego was taking place at a large, downtown law firm.  With attorneys comprising 75 percent of our tenant base, our 525 B Street office in the Golden Eagle Plaza–which coincidentally, previously housed a law firm–has the culture of a firm, including the seamless support of our administrative staff and back office resources.

In addition to us showing our appreciation and checking in with our new and long-term tenants, this was an opportunity for them to do a little networking and renew acquaintances.

Barrister’s Suite Manager for San Diego, Amy Hicks sees first hand the synergy that has evolved amongst the attorneys at her office.

“They are always exchanging ideas, discussing current case law, and referring cases back and forth.  It’s an invaluable resource for them to have like-minded contemporaries to rely on to cover a court appearance when on vacation, or file a pleading in an emergency. There are even occasions when attorneys share secretarial and paralegal support.”

Richard Norton is a principal at NORTON MOORE & ADAMS, LLP, a firm that handles civil cases.  He has been with us since our inception at the building in 2003.

“I have been here since Barrister started in this building and intend to continue my tenancy into the future,” Norton said.

Golden Eagle Goes Green

FootprintLeading the trend towards increased sustainability, international real estate firm, Hines, challenged tenants at Golden Eagle Plaza in downtown San Diego to “green” their office as part of their company-wide program. The firm announced its Hines GO (Green Office) Program to the tenants at 525 B Street in June. Since then, about 80% of the tenants at the downtown San Diego location have jumped on board with efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and increase sustainability. The GO program complements the LEED Green Building Rating System and the Energy Star “Bring Your Green to Work” programs, drawing on Hines’ 52 years of sustainable expertise at more than 1,100 properties. Hines is a leader in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program. The Golden Eagle Plaza building was awarded the Energy Star Label in 2007 and has been making ongoing efforts in sustainability since then.

Barrister Executive Suites, Inc., located on the 15th floor of the Golden Eagle Plaza building, quickly adopted the program, earning more than 70 Leaf Credits to qualify for their Green Office designation in October. The process included passing evaluation criteria in seven categories and earning points for implementing more sustainable alternatives such as energy efficient lighting, using “green” kitchen products, and purchasing recyclable office paper.  Amy Hicks, Suite Manager at Barrister Executive Suites, Inc. said “green” offices are starting to play a major part in acquiring new tenants.

“More and more, companies are adopting internal green policies for their business and considering that as part of their criteria when seeking new office space,” Hicks stated.

Barrister Executives Suites, Inc is proud to partner with a true “green” leader within the commercial real estate industry. Congratulations to Hines on their outstanding efforts and commitment to sustainability!
